COVID19 Boxing Classic – Top 10 Shittiest Match-ups we’d Love to See Right Now

As we all sit at home while tyrannical politicians and bureaucratic hacks have reached unfounded power and continue to impose stay at home orders, we ponder, when will be the next great boxing match? While we’re all stuck watching classic boxing matchups on YouTube, reruns of the Raptors NBA championship run, or Liverpool and Man City displaying their dominance in the Premiere League last year, we are all wishing for a return of live sports. As of right now, I’d guess that we would take anything we could get, and would settle for some of the shittiest boxing matchups possible.

Despite being on the same caliber of watching paint dry, here are boxing’s top 10 shittiest match-ups that we’d all love to see right now:

Mariusz Wach vs Kevin Johnson

Unlike the rest of the matchups, our first fight of the night is actually taking place in Poland on June 12th. Because of COVID19 there will be no fans in the stadium, but I’m sure we’ll all be happy to watch this cracker of a matchup from the confines of our own homes. If there was ever a fight that we know will go the distance, it is definitely this one. Both men possess mediocre records and are well past their prime at the age of 40, but hey we’ll take it.

Hughie Fury vs. the winner

Who doesn’t like to watch Hughie Fury fight? Tons of action, engaging with his opponent, and always in toe to toe battles. I can only imagine if he took on the winner of Wach/Johnson, we’d have a fight of the year in the making.

Devon Alexander vs. Amir Khan II

Their first fight had me on the edge of my seat…. Devon Alexander was a hot name at one point, but numerous losses, sporadic fights here and there in which he has lost to less than stellar opposition leave him as a perfect opponent for Khan. Khan hasn’t been much better lately, so this is the perfect rematch for us to pass time while locked at home.

Billy Joe Saunders vs. Demetrius Andrade

Both of these men can box, but that doesn’t mean both of these men can produce fireworks, because they don’t. It is a true 50-50 matchup, that will produce a lot of jabs and a lot of dancing. BJS vs. Andrade was supposed to happen previously but BJS failed a drug test. With everyone’s focus on COVID19, maybe the testing will be laxed and this is the perfect timing for the matchup to finally materialize.

Andre Dirrell vs. Andre Ward

This was a matchup that was talked about a long time ago, and was one that the “boxing purists” would have loved. Dirrell never lived up to his hype and suffered a number of setbacks, but maybe it’s time for Andre Ward to come out of retirement and face Dirrell to keep us “entertained” while the world is on hold.

Rances Barthelemy vs. Robert Easter Jr. II

The first fight had some hype leading up to the fight, but come fight night, it was a horrendous clash of styles. There was little action and the first fight ended in a draw. Now is the perfecting time to settle the score in a rematch.

Miguel Vazquez vs. Pauli Malignaggi

Miguel Vazquez seems like he’s been around forever. At one point he was considered a crafty and tough opponent for anyone, but that didn’t mean he’d excite the fans. Pauli Malignaggi was always one who garnered excitement through his flashy outfits or his smack talk, but never really in the ring, due to his lack of punching power. Pauli still toys with the idea of coming back to boxing, and has recently fought in bare knuckle boxing. They are close enough in weight, so let’s make it happen!

Ishe Smith vs. Anthony Mundine

Anthony Mundine has always generated headlines in the media… not from his boxing though, but from many of his controversial statements. With a combined 21 losses between the two, lets put “The Man” versus the man who was at one time considered “the contender.”

John Ruiz vs. Evander Holyfield IV

For our co main event, we have two heavyweights who have come out of retirement to conclude what could be one of the world’s most boring trilogies ever. Evander Holyfield at 57 and John Ruiz at 48 need to finally settle the score and “entertain” us one last time.

Justin Trudeau vs. Boris Johnson

As our writers are all from the UK, except myself, who hails from Canada, this will be the perfect main event to entertain us. As a Canadian, I still technically fall under the monarchy of Queen Elizabeth II; but now more than ever is a perfect time for us Canadians to break free. What better way to do it than a matchup between Justin Trudeau and Boris Johnson? Justin Trudeau is 1-0 with 1 KO in his boxing career in a charity matchup against a conservative senator. But Johnson rose from the canvas and is 1-0 versus the Corona Virus. And in fact, he has even stated that he wants to avenge a fellow conservative’s loss. After spending time in the ICU and beating the virus, Boris Johnson is back at work, while Trudeau is still in self-proclaimed isolation. It’s Trudeaus skill and experience versus Johnson’s determination and heart. Who will win our COVID19 boxing classic and can Trudeau help Canada finally break free from the Monarchy?
